A gas-fired water heater is the most common type and is standard in most American homes. As the name implies, it heats water through a gas-powered burner. There is also a thermostatic control attached to the gas burner.
Electric hot water heaters are also popular. Instead of a burner, it uses two 45 W electric rods to get the water hot. You should be able to see a thermostatic control and sensor on the surface of the tank.
Finally, there is the hybrid heat pump water heater. This rather innovative device heats water by sucking up the ambient heat in the space. The heat pump itself is electrical. This type of tank is more efficient than an electric heater and has the added bonus of dehumidifying the space. You now have all the information you need to choose a water tank for your home.
